The Importance Of The Wedding Morning Timeline… “Getting Ready Schedule”

When most couples think about their wedding timeline, they focus on the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. But one of the most important parts of the day happens long before anyone walks down the aisle. The wedding morning!

It's the foundation for everything that follows.

A well planned getting ready schedule keeps makeup, hair and every important vendor arriving during that time, flow in synce, helping the day feel calm, organized, and enjoyable rather than rushed and stressful. Can things change? Yes, but at least you have a schedule to start with so no one guessing, lost or confused. I’ll break it down below key pieces as to how I create, why it’s important and share my opinions.

A Timeline Is More Than Appointment Times

Many brides assume a getting ready schedule is simply a list of who is having their hair or makeup done and when. In reality, it's a carefully planned roadmap for the entire morning. Each service must fit around the arrival of photographers, videographers, florists (bringing bouquets), getting dressed, first looks, family photos, transportation, and ultimately arriving at the ceremony on time. When one part of the morning falls behind, it can create a snowball affect for everything that follows.

Every Wedding Is Different

No two wedding mornings are exactly alike. The number of people receiving services, ceremony time, travel between locations, photography schedule, and whether both hair and makeup are being provided all influence how the morning should be planned. That's why a realistic timeline is far more valuable than simply estimating how long each service takes.

Preparation Begins Before the Artist Arrives

The scheduled arrival time is not the time the first makeup application begins. As you see in the examples above. The first 30 minutes allow time for the makeup artist to find parking, unload their vehicle, enter the home, hotel, or venue, and set up a professional workstation.

However, the makeup location must be selected and prepared before the artist walks through the door.

A clean, empty table near a window should already be available. The table should be cleared of food, drinks, decorations, bags, clothing, and personal belongings. Waiting until the artist arrives to choose a location or clear a table can easily delay the first appointment and affect the entire schedule. Even a 10-minute delay at the beginning of the morning can place unnecessary pressure on every appointment that follows.

Every Service Requires Its Full Appointment Time

Each adult makeup application is scheduled for 45 minutes. Bridal makeup is scheduled for 60 minutes. These appointment times are carefully planned to allow for skin preparation, a complete makeup application, lashes if selected, and the finishing details needed for photography and long-lasting wear. Rushing an appointment to make up for an earlier delay is never ideal. That is why everyone receiving services should be present, prepared, and ready to sit in the chair at their scheduled time.

Moment In Between Each Service

Since Covid, a brief 1-2 minute transition is included after each makeup application. During this time, the workstation is tidied, products and tools are sanitized, hands are washed, and a fresh set of clean makeup brushes is prepared for the next person. Each person receives her own clean and sanitized brush set. Brushes that have been used are kept separate and are not cleaned or reused onsite. One to two minutes may seem insignificant, but over the course of several appointments, those minutes are necessary for maintaining both sanitation and the schedule.

Why I Don’t Recommend The Bride Should Be Last

Many brides automatically assume they should be the final person to receive makeup. However, scheduling the bride last leaves very little room for unexpected delays. If someone arrives late, steps away during her appointment time, or requires additional attention, the bride’s service becomes the appointment most likely to feel rushed.

In my sample schedule above, I placed the bride in the middle, what I consider my most creative spot. This protects her full 60-minute appointment and allows her time to relax afterward instead of moving directly from the makeup chair into her dress.

At that point in the morning, most of the other wedding vendors have not arrived yet, which means fewer interruptions and a calmer environment. This helps keep the bride’s headspace clear, relaxed, and focused while her look is being created.

Professional bridal makeup is designed for long-lasting wear, so there is no benefit to waiting until the final possible moment to begin the bride’s application.

Mom’s Turn To Get Gorgeous

The bride’s mother is typically scheduled immediately after the bride. Once the bride’s makeup is complete, she can begin preparing to get dressed while her mother is in the makeup chair. This allows both the bride and her mother to be ready for meaningful getting-ready photographs.

These moments may include the bride’s mother helping with the gown, fastening buttons, adjusting jewelry, placing the veil, or sharing a quiet moment before the ceremony.

Placing the bride’s mother too early may leave her waiting for several hours. And placing her too late may cause her to miss these important photographs.

Final Thoughts

No wedding morning will ever unfold exactly as planned and that's perfectly normal. The goal of a getting-ready schedule isn't to predict every unexpected moment. It's to create enough structure that when something does change, the rest of the morning can continue moving forward with as little disruption as possible.
